A political commentator says the CIA acknowledgement of its role in the 1953 coup against the democratically-elected Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq is “the tip of the iceberg” in the US spying agency’s anti-Iran plots.
“This admission is just the tip of the iceberg because the US has been actively involved in coup and regime change campaigns across the globe for more than 50 years in different parts of the world, in places like Asia, Europe, Latin America and of course the Middle East, but the methods have been the same,” Qanbar Naderi told Press TV in an interview.
“The idea behind all these things is just regime change but methods have changed. Sometimes actively and directly involved militarily, sometimes by funding and training insurgency groups, sometimes through anti-regime propaganda campaigns and sometimes direct military involvement but I told you the idea is still the same, regime change,” he added.
He stated that the hostility between Iran and the US stems from Washington’s attempts for “regime change” in the Islamic Republic.

The analyst said anti-Iran propaganda campaign is still under way round the clock across the globe through different media outlets which are claiming that Tehran is destabilizing the Middle East.
“The US is actively involved in cyber warfare trying to dismantle Iran’s nuclear energy program. That explains why the hostility refuses to go away between Iran and the United States,” Naderi stated.
He added that the democratic government of Mosaddeq had deprived the US and Britain of access to Iran’s oil.

“They elected a government that was talking to them, that tried to nationalize the [Anglo-] Iranian Oil Company which by the way was under the control of the American and the British oil giants,” he said, adding, "The Americans and the British did not want to lose their grip on Iran and its natural resources especially gas and oil.”

On Monday, the CIA declassified a document, which officially conformed for the first time Washington’s role in the 1953 coup d’état against Mosaddeq.

The document, published on the National Security Archive website, was initially released in 1981, but most of it was blacked out at the time, including an entire section on the coup.

On August 15, 1953, the British and US intelligence agencies initiated a coup by the Iranian military, setting off a chain of events including riots in the streets of Iran’s capital, Tehran, that led to the overthrow and arrest of Mosaddeq four days later.

Mosaddeq, convicted of treason, served three years in prison and died under house arrest in 1967.
