Iran’s Majlis is scheduled to impeach Minister of Science, Research and Technology Reza Faraji-Dana on August 20.
Member of the Majlis Presiding Board Hossein Sobhani-Nia said on Friday that Faraji-Dana will attend the Majlis session on August 20, and respond to the lawmakers’ questions.
“Based on the Majlis bylaws, the president or his designated representative will attend the session to defend the minister,” Sobhani-Nia pointed out.
The impeachment proceedings against Faraji-Dana were notified at a Majlis open session on August 12 with 51 signatories.
The critics of Faraji-Dana mainly accuse him of politicizing the academic environment and criticize the minister for appointing some political figures as his advisors and deputies.
In response to the impeachment plan, Iran’s First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri defended the performance of Faraji-Dana on his Facebook page and hailed the minister for bringing “fresh hope and vigor” to the Iranian academic atmosphere under his tenure.
Jahangiri praised Faraji-Dana’s success in implementing the administration of President Hassan Rouhani’s plans in the science and technology arena and noted, “Undoubtedly, the president and administration are determined that those plans would continue.”
On October 27, 2013, Majlis granted vote of confidence to Faraji-Dana after the lawmakers refused to approve the qualifications of Rouhani’s initial nominee for the position.
