TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of Iran-Romania Parliamentary Friendship Group Mohammad Mehdi Zahedi and Romanian Deputy Foreign Minister Carmen Burlaco in a meeting in Tehran underlined the two states' resolve to enhance mutual cooperation to adopt foreign policies based on mutual interests.
During the meeting in the Iranian capital on Sunday, Zahedi and Burlaco discussed bilateral ties and regional developments.

Zahedi pointed to Iran's interactions with different world countries and exchange of visits by diplomatic delegations, and said, "I hope that these visits and an observation of Iran's realities will result in reflecting the truth of the country."

He pointed to the futile efforts of the US and the West to impose sanctions against Iran, and said, "Self-belief and independence of the Iranian nation are two important cause of the US-led sanctions against Iran."

The Romanian deputy foreign minister, for her part, pointed to the latest status of Iran-Romania ties, and said, "I hope that the Iran-Romania relations will further expand."

Burlaco pointed to the talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, France, China and Britain plus Germany), and said, "I am optimistic about the trend of these negotiations."

Burlaco underlined that political solution and dialogue are appropriate means of settling the regional crises, and said, "Iran plays an important and influential role in the region."

Last month, Zahedi and Romanian Ambassador to Tehran Christian Theodorsco explored avenues for bolstering and reinvigorating mutual cooperation.

Zahedi pointed to the status quo of Iran-Romania relations, and said, "In view of the two countries' vast capacities and capabilities in different fields, there are many grounds for the expansion of economic, commercial and cultural cooperation between Iran and Romania which should be utilized in their interest."

He noted that parliamentary dialogue, specially in the framework of friendship groups, plays an effective role in facilitating friendly relations.

The Romanian ambassador, for his part, pointed to the friendly relations between Iran and Romania, and said, "The Romanian government and parliament welcome expansion of bilateral ties, given the good record of positive mutual cooperation between the two countries."

Romania is a country located at the intersection of Central and Southeastern Europe, bordering on the Black Sea. Romania shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the West, Ukraine and Moldova to the Northeast and East, and Bulgaria to the South. At 238,400 square kilometers (92,000 sq mi), Romania is the ninth largest country of the European Union by area, and has the seventh largest population of the European Union with over 19 million people. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest, the tenth largest city in the EU, with a population of around two million.
