At least one Afghan police officer has been killed and three others wounded in an attack in the suburbs of Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul.
The attack took place on Thursday when a bomber detonated his explosive-laden vehicle in Tangi Tarakhil on the outskirts of Kabul.

A bomber was trying to enter Kabul “with the intention of detonating explosives in a crowded part of the city,” said Hashmat Stanekzai, a spokesman for the Kabul provincial police chief.

“He was being followed by police,” he said.

Abdul Rahman Rahimi, the chief of Kabul’s provincial police, said the blast occurred after police stopped the car.

The Taliban militants have claimed the responsibility for the attack.

Afghanistan is witnessing a spike in militant attacks, including assaults targeting foreigners in Kabul.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned on Sunday the new wave of terror attacks against Afghans and foreigners, calling on all religious, political, and social leaders to undertake serious efforts to fight militancy.

The Taliban militant group has vowed to escalate the attacks on Afghan forces and US-led troops, their bases, diplomatic missions, and vehicle convoys before the foreign forces exit the country at the end of 2014.
