Iranian VP: Tehran welcomes closer ties with Minsk

29 Dec 2014 - 9:30

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri described Belarus as a “friendly country and reliable partner," and said the Islamic Republic welcomes the promotion of relations with Belarus in all spheres.
In a meeting with visiting Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei in Tehran on Sunday, Jahangiri pointed to the growing relations between the two countries, and said, “Belarus is of great importance to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

"Bilateral ties in both political and economic areas are growing, however, serious moves are needed to be taken regarding economic relations between the two countries,” he said.

Jahangiri also pointed to the fact that Iran and Belarus both are facing Western sanctions, saying that embargo can never prevent a country from reaching its goals.

The Iranian official went on to say that the sanctions are not able to hamper the expansion of Tehran-Minsk relations.

He also underlined that the two countries should provide further support for each other in the international circles, adding that they should also take more effective steps on issues of mutual interest.

Vladimir Makei, for his part, called political ties between Iran and Belarus close, and said the two countries should further focus on the expansion of trade ties in a bid to help economic cooperation match political ties.
