Obama phones King Salman to discuss Saudi war on Yemen

18 Apr 2015 - 10:14

US President Barack Obama has called Saudi Arabian King Salman to discuss the kingdom’s military offensive against neighboring Yemen, the White House says.

According to the White House statement, Obama and Salman both agreed during their telephone conversation on Friday that there is an urgent need to find a political solution to achieve stability in Yemen.

In addition, the US president and the Saudi king talked about the importance of responding to the humanitarian needs of the people of Yemen.

The humanitarian situation in the conflict-ridden country is rapidly deteriorating. Many international aid organizations have sought clearances to dispatch medical and other humanitarian supplies by air and sea to civilians in need.

Obama also reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to Saudi Arabia’s security.

Separately, the White House said Obama has invited the heads of Persian Gulf Cooperation Council to Washington for talks over a range of issues, including the Yemeni crisis.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera America reported on Friday that a number of senior US military officials have argued against the Saudi military aggression against Yemen.

The commanders have been quoted as saying that the Saudi intervention was a bad idea from the very beginning and that it will possibly turn into a quagmire for Riyadh.

The United States was among the first countries to back the Saudi onslaught against the Yemeni people that began on March 26 in a bid to restore power to the country’s fugitive president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

According to sources in the Yemeni army, some 2,600 people have been killed during the Saudi aggression.
