Swiss statement was the best we could get, Iran’s Zarif says

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the recent nuclear agreement reached between Tehran and world powers in Lausanne, Switzerland, was not “perfect”, but at the same time described it as a “balanced” agreement.

In a Wednesday interview with Washington Post’s reporter David Ignatius in New York University, United States, the visiting Iranian foreign minister described Swiss Statement as an agreement that does not reflect all the needs of everybody.

“Obviously, if you wanted an agreement that reflected every need of every player in the room you’ll never have an agreement,” Zarif said, speaking in front of a large number of university students.

He further noted that although the agreement was not a perfect one neither for Iran nor for the US and EU partners, but “it’s the best anybody can get”.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached a framework nuclear agreement on April 2 in Lausanne, Switzerland, with both sides committed to push for a final deal until the end of June.

The framework provides a series of solutions to the differences that will be the basis of a comprehensive joint plan of action.

According to the framework agreement, the nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the UNSC, the European Union and the US will be removed.
