Fiji International Film Festival awards Iran’s ‘Hush, Girls Don’t Scream’

Iranian filmmaker Pouran Derakhshandeh's Hush, Girls Don’t Scream has garnered two top awards at the 2015 Fiji International Film Festival.

The festival granted its Best Film Award to Derakhshandeh and its Best Actress Award to Tannaz Tabatabaei for the 2013 cinematic production.

The social drama tells the story of abused children and their negligent families who fail to meet the emotional needs of their kids.

Hush! Girls Don’t Scream will also be screened at the first edition of International Family Films Festival in the Turkish capital Ankara. The annual festival will also screen films from Turkey, Japan, the US, India, China and Australia until May 24.

Derakhshandeh’s latest drama won the Best Film Award of Iran’s Fajr International Film Festival in 2012. It has also been warmly welcomed in numerous international events in Europe and North America.

The film received the Best Feature-Length Award of the 4th London Iranian film festival and the Audience Special Award of the 2014 Irvine International Film Festival in the United States.

Pouran Derakhshandeh, who has directed 12 feature-length movies and dozens of documentaries over the past four decades, is one of Iran’s most successful female filmmakers.

A Little Bird of Happiness (1987), Passing through the Dust (1988), Lost Time (1989), Love without Frontier (1998), Candle in the Wind (2003), Wet Dream (2005), Eternal Children (2006) and Endless Dream (2010) are among her better-known works.
