Iran claims title at 2015 World Archery Championships

2 Aug 2015 - 11:31

Iran men’s national compound team has displayed its superiority at the 2015 World Archery Championships in Denmark to win the title of the prestigious sports event.

Iran’s Esmaeil Ebadi, Amir Kazempour and Majid Qeidi recorded impressive performance in the final match of the compound section outside the Danish Parliament building, Christiansborg Palace, in the capital, Copenhagen, on Saturday and clinched the victory.

The Iranian trio went two points down during the first end of the gold medal match against Canada, and the deficit remained after a further six arrows.

Iranian archers then came from behind over the back two ends, and took the game to the wire to snatch a draw. Iranians shots two six-arrow ends of 57, and Canadian sportsmen managed to secure a pair of 56-point series.

The battle for gold medal went to a tiebreaker as both teams shared points at 226. Canada started with a nine in the shoot-off, then Ebadi collected 10 points for Iran.

Iranian sportsmen finally won the tiebreaker with 30 points to Canada’s 29.

Ebadi said he and his teammates were confident of taking a podium at the event.

“Before we came, we were sure we could win a medal but we didn’t expect gold,” he said, adding, “After we beat Colombia, we started to believe that making the finals was possible.”

Iran had edged Venezuela before Colombia and then Italy in the semifinal round.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Mahmoud Goudarzi congratulated the national Iranian compound squad on the victory.

The 2015 World Archery Championships, which was the 48th edition of the event, was staged from July 26 to August 2 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The program featured individual, team and mixed team events in the compound and re-curve disciplines. A record number of 623 archers were competing across the disciplines.
