Berlin reaffirms strong support for Iran deal amid Israel criticism

5 Aug 2015 - 18:14

Berlin, August 5, IRNA -- The German government reiterated its strong support for what it viewed 'a historic' Iran nuclear accord amid ongoing Israeli efforts to torpedo the deal.

Asked by IRNA on a reaction to the latest remarks by the Israeli Benjamin Neanyahu who has openly called for resisting the Vienna accord, German deputy foreign ministry spokeswoman Sawsan Chebli replied, We view this agreement as a historic chance as it provides prospects for peace in the region.

We have communicated this point to the Israeli side. We are doing our share to de-escalate and explain the deal to our Israeli partners and point out to the prospects of such an agreement, she added.

Chebli was referring to statements by Netanyahu who personally urged US Jewish groups to reject a White House-backed Iran nuclear deal Tuesday.

'I don't oppose this deal because I want war, I oppose this because I want to prevent war and this deal will bring war. It will spark a nuclear arms race in the region,' Netanyahu said reportedly in a webcast hosted by American Jewish groups.

Meanwhile, Chebli stressed the Iranian nuclear deal was a 'great achievement' which needed to be implemented by all relevant parties.

Chebli pointed out the Iran nuclear accord could also pave the way for making progress in other Mideast conflict hotspots like Syria.
