Iran's grand Ayatollah warns Saudis against execution of Sheikh Nimr

26 Oct 2015 - 18:41

Tehran, Oct 26, IRNA – Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi on Monday warned the Saudi government against execution of Saudi national Shia Muslim religious leader, saying that such harsh moves will injure the sentiments of all Shia Muslims across the world.

The ayatollah’s warning to Saudi government came against the backdrop of the death sentence against Saudi Shia religious leader, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.
He criticized the international bodies for keeping silent at such a high-magnitude violation of human rights in Saudi Arabia.

“Horrible and systematic violation of human rights are perpetrated by the Saudi government, the examples of which are Saudi treatment of Shias in al-Ahsa and Qatif [in the Eastern Province],” Makarem Shirazi said.

He noted that the death sentence for Nimr would not be tolerated by the Shia Muslim religious leaders and their followers across the world.

Al-Nimr has been charged with disturbing the country’s security, rebuking the Saudi government and Saudi King for failure to respect civil rights of the Saudi people.
Activists say there are over 30,000 political prisoners in Saudi Arabia.

Human rights group, London-based Amnesty International, censured Saudi government for not addressing the “dire human rights situation” in the kingdom.
