TEHRAN (Tasnim) - President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz on Saturday met with the chancellor of the University of Tehran here in the Iranian capital.
The European official, who arrived in Tehran earlier in the day, met Mohammad Nili Ahmadabadi, the president of University of Tehran.
Later on Saturday, he also held a meeting with Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani, during which they conferred on a range of issues.
In their meeting, Schulz and Larijani discussed the bilateral relations between Iran and the European Parliament.
They also discussed the latest developments in the Middle East, with the focus on a crisis that has engulfed Syria for more than 4 years.
During his stay in Tehran, Schulz is also scheduled to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and Interior Minister and head of the country’s anti-drug office Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli.
The European Parliament (EP) is the directly elected parliamentary institution of the European Union (EU). Together with the Council of the European Union (the Council) and the European Commission, it exercises the legislative function of the EU.
The EP is composed of 751 (previously 766) members, who represent the second largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India) and the largest trans-national democratic electorate in the world (375 million eligible voters in 2009).
