A group exhibition on Khayyam will soon show artworks by several acclaimed Iranian artists at the Silk Road Art Gallery in Tehran.
Titled ‘The Secrets of Eternity, Khayyam and Contemporary Art,’ the exhibition will include a wide spectrum of art, through various mediums including video art, painting, sculpture and volume art, ISNA reported.
All the works are thematized on the celebrated Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and poet Omar Khayyam (1048-1131).
Born in Nishapur in northeastern Iran, Khayyam is widely considered one of the most influential scientists of the Middle Ages. He wrote numerous treatises on mechanics, geography, mineralogy and astronomy.
Precise and simple verses of the poet could certainly be attractive for foreign visitors, in addition to Iranians, said gallery manager, Anahita Qabaian. “Khayyam’s literature is universal and people of all nationalities easily relate to his works.”
Such art events are not common in the country. This is the first time a large group exhibition has invited a wide range of artists to present works on a specific subject.
Making a journey in time and connecting with ancient and contemporary eras through visual arts “will be exciting for the viewers who will be exposed to art works created in unique styles of the artists, rooted in their different understanding of the poet,” Qabaian said.
Due to the large variety of artworks, the exhibition will be held in two parts to give ample time to the viewers to appreciate the works. The first part will open on November 27 and run through December 25.
Three Generations
An introduction to the exhibition says: “The art show looks at visual art creations by artists of three generations, thematizing the widely known ancient Persian poet and scholar, Omar Khayyam.
The poet enjoys high status and popularity in the world, and his quatrain poetry collection (stanza or poem of four lines) has been translated into numerous languages, and has a prestigious place in the world book market. His thoughts and works have long been a source of inspiration to artists. This is the first group event on Khayyam-based artworks.”
Farshid Mesqali, animator and graphic designer, Mohammad Ahsaei, calligraphist and graphist, Abbas Kiarostami, photographer and film director, Pariyoush Ganji, painter, Hossien Mahjoubi, painter and Farah Osouli, painter, are among the 40 artists who will present their creations to the Khayyam project.
The second part of the show is from January 8 to February 5, 2016 at the gallery, at No. 210, between Qods and Vesal St., Keshavarz Blvd.
