Iranian actors to stage Woody Allen play in Tehran

16 Dec 2015 - 16:46

Iranian actors will stage a Persian version of ‘Don’t Drink the Water’ by American comedian and playwright Woody Allen in the capital, Tehran.

Directed by Davoud Bani-Ardalan, the play has been translated into Persian by Negar Shaterian and will be performed by a group of 11 Iranian actors, including Sina Razani, Reza Afshar, Aida Sadeqi and Sepand Amir-Soleimani.

‘Don’t Drink the Water’ was Allen’s first professionally produced play, which premiered on Broadway in 1966 and played for nearly 600 performances at three different Broadway theaters.

The Cold War farce takes place inside an American embassy, where a family of American tourists takes refuge after being accused of espionage in a fictional east European country.

‘Don’t Drink the Water’ is filled with bright and hilarious dialogue, and tries to portray the chaotic world of its time in the form of a theatrical circus. It was also adapted into a film and a television movie.

Woody Allen was born in 1935 in New York. During his nearly five decades of creative career, he pursued various artistic works from writing and directing comedy dramas to playing jazz music. He has been nominated for Academy Awards 24 times in diverse categories, and won 4 Oscars. ‘Annie Hall’ (1977) and ‘Blue Jasmine’ (2013) are among his much-admired movies.

The Persian version of Allen’s ‘Don’t Drink the Water’ will go on stage at Tehran’s Hafez Theater Hall starting from January 4, 2016.
