Tehran, January 16, The Iran Project - Iran releases four Iranian-American prisoners in a prisoner swap deal, Tehran's general prosecutor announced on Saturday.
T he prosecutor general of Tehran, Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told reporters that the decision to release the prisoners have been taken based on the country’s general interests.
The Washington Post’s reporter Jason Rezaian, former US Marine Amir Mirzaee Hekmati, Saeed Abedini, and osratollah Khosravi are the prisoners who have been released on Saturday.
The release comes as implementation of the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) finalized by Iran and world powers in July 2015 is set to begin in a few hours.
On the other side, IRNA also reported that the United States in exchange also released seven Iranians held in US prisons. The source named Nader Madanlou, Bahram Mekanik, Khosro Afghahi, Arash Qahreman, Touraj Faridi, Nima Golestaneh and Ali Sabounchi as the seven Iranian nationals who have been released.
