Clinton congratulates Sanders, but says he can't win

10 Apr 2016 - 13:37

US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has congratulated her rival Bernie Sanders on his victory in Wyoming, but reminded him of her “nearly insurmountable lead” in delegates.

"We congratulate Senator Sanders on a spirited campaign in Wyoming. Outperforming expectations, Hillary Clinton tied in pledged delegates today and now leads Senator Sanders by approximately 220 pledged delegates nationwide,” Clinton’s campaign manager Robby Mook said in a statement on Saturday.

“Thanks to the help of thousands of volunteers, Hillary is winning the popular vote by almost 2.4 million and has a nearly insurmountable lead in pledged delegates that will become harder and harder to overcome after each contest.” he added.

Sanders won more than 55 percent of the vote in Saturday’s Wyoming caucuses, but will split the state’s 14 delegates evenly with Clinton.

The Vermont senator has registered eight wins in the last nine contests, getting a morale boost ahead of the crucial primary in New York State, where voters will cast their ballots on April 19.

Sanders, whose campaign was boosted by landslide victories in Alaska, Washington, Hawaii and Wisconsin, is hoping to cut further into Clinton’s lead in her home state of New York.

Including the Wyoming results, Clinton has 1,287 pledged delegates to Sanders’s 1,037.
