Iran committed to promoting Asian cooperation: Diplomat

28 Apr 2016 - 18:35

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy foreign minister reaffirmed the country’s commitment to working with other Asian nations to boost interaction and trust in the continent.

Addressing the fifth foreign ministers’ meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held in Beijing, China, Morteza Sarmadi said one of Iran’s political strategies is enhancing interaction and cooperation among the CICA members.

He noted that Iran has turned into a very suitable center for bilateral and multilateral partnership and for investment in infrastructural projects, as in energy, science and technology, and other fields of cooperation, which Asia really needs.

Sarmadi also slammed terrorism, extremism, sectarianism, separatism, and barbaric acts of Takfiri terrorists as the main problems that have gripped the Middle East region and Asia.

The Iranian diplomat further called for concerted action against terrorist groups and efforts to cut off financial and military aid to them.

The ongoing Beijing conference, attended by representatives of 26 countries, kicked off on Thursday morning with a speech by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

China hosted also the fourth CICA summit in Shanghai in 2014. It holds the CICA presidency from 2014 to 2016.

The idea of convening the CICA was first proposed by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on October 5, 1992, at the 47th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
