12 Jun 2016 - 16:31

TEHRAN (FNA)- Spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi announced that Tehran, Beijing and Washington will soon start a series of trilateral meetings to discuss modernization of Iran's heavy water reactor in Arak.

"We will hold trilateral meetings among Iran, China and the US soon so that the three countries will move forward to redesign the Arak reactor in a coordinated way," Kamalvandi said in an interview with the Iranian Etemad newspaper on Sunday.

Noting that the first trilateral meeting will be held within the next few weeks, he said the meeting will likely take place in "Vienna".

Kamalvandi also said that Iran will send a delegation to China in the near future to confer on the modernization of Arak reactor, adding that a Chinese delegation will also visit Iran.

In relevant remarks late May, AEOI Chief Ali Akbar Salehi said that China, the US and Iran have formed a workgroup to modernize Arak heavy water reactor, he said, "We hope to launch the modern Arak reactor in the next five years based on schedule- and of course we are ahead of it."

Also in February, Salehi said the project to redesign the Arak heavy water plant under the nuclear deal will be completed within the next 3-4 years.
