Court of Justice holds legal proceedings against attackers of Saudi Embassy

19 Jul 2016 - 17:53

Tehran, July 19, IRNA – Court of Justice on Tuesday held legal proceedings against attackers of the Saudi Embassy. They attacked the Embassy and Consulate in Mashad last January in protest over putting to death of the Shia religious leader.

It was the second court hearing in which the remaining eight defendants were notified about the charges brought against them by the prosecutor.

The court issued indictments for 21 attackers during the two trial sessions held on Monday and Tuesday, according to the court judge, Farshid Dehqani.

He said that the court will issue verdicts within ten days.

The attackers are accused of disturbing the public discipline, illegal gathering and intentional destruction of the Saudi embassy.

Following Riyadh's brutal execution of a prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqer al-Nimr, angry protestors stormed Saudi embassy in Tehran as well as the country's consulate general in Mashad on January 2, 2016.

The Saudi government protested to Iran over violation of diplomatic immunity of the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and cut off relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iranian government said that the protest was normal reaction to the Saudi brutality against the Shia leader and required the Judiciary to bring to justice the individuals responsible for the attack on the Saudi Embassy.

The Islamic Republic of Iran says that it believes in Islamic solidarity to help the Palestinians end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territory.

Iran does not welcome strained relations with the Saudi government and the legal action against attackers of the Saudi Embassy accounts for diplomatic means of de-escalation with the Saudi government.
