August 5, The Iran Project - The head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society has said the United Nation can use IRCS as a base for providing humanitarian assistance in the region. 

In a meeting with the UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O'Brien, head of IRCS  Amir Mohsen Ziaee said Red Crescent Society is the largest philanthropist non-governmental organization in the country.

Iranian Red Crescent Society also offers health and environmental services in regional and international levels, Ziaee added.

Referring to various problems Middle East is facing due to climate changes, migration, terrorism, etc., he said that UN can offer better services to the people in need in the region with the collaboration of humanitarian organizations like IRCS.

The UN top relief official also stressed on the development of the UN-IRCS relations in the field of providing humanitarian assistance to the crisis-hit countries in the region  such as Yemen, Iraq, Syria, etc.

The UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O'Brien arrived in Tehran on Sunday to expand bilateral cooperation in the area of humanitarian missions.

The official visit comes at a time when several countries in the Middle East are gripped by deadly conflicts with many of their citizens in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

According to a recent report by ReliefWeb, a news portal administered by OCHA, O’Brien’s trip to Tehran could be an opportunity to draw attention to the Islamic Republic’s considerable experience and expertise in disaster management and humanitarian response.

The visit is also aimed at encouraging Iranian authorities to continue to alleviate the sufferings of violence-stricken people in the Middle East, the report said.
