UN Secretary-General urges world leaders to adhere to 'robust' Iran nuclear deal

23 Nov 2016 - 11:33

Sputnik- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that the Iranian nuclear agreement was "robust" and the leaders of the international community should abide by the accord.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UN chief said that he called on world leaders to be committed to this accord. "I believe that this agreement by P5+1… that was a robust agreement… We have to respect this agreement. I have been discussing this matter with Iranian authorities and they are also concerned that… if there are any changes or any disruptions of the process of this agreement then it will take much-much longer time [to implement the deal]. During that time, who knows what will happen again," Ban told the CNN broadcaster in a Tuesday interview, which was dedicated to the forthcoming end of the official's tenure.

In July 2015, the P5+1 group of countries, comprising the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany, reached an agreement with Iran to ensure Tehran’s nuclear program remained peaceful in exchange for sanctions relief.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, US President-elect Donald Trump had repeatedly criticized the Iranian nuclear deal, which limits Tehran's nuclear program to the peaceful purposes in exchange for the easing of international sanctions on Iran, calling it the "stupidest" deal of all time.
