AEOI head: Maryam Mirzakhani glory of Iran, Islam

MNA – Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi said late Maryam Mirzakhani was source of honor for Iran and the Islamic world.

Salehi made the remarks during a memorial ceremony held Tuesday in Tehran to commemorate Iranian math genius Mirzakhani who recently passed away due to cancer recurrence.

“Professor Mirzakhani was an excellent privilege to the humanity,” asserted the official stressing that emergence of great minds like Mirzakhani marked a notable achievement for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Salehi said the Iranian mathematician had passed fundamental stages of her education inside the country and eventually managed to become first-ever female winner of the prestigious Fields Medal prize.

AEOI head further acclaimed successes of the female math intellectual and expressed regret over her loss.

Iran’s Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari, yet another official present at the ceremony, described Mirzakhani as an influential scientific figure and an elegant person.

He further urged the country’s officials to spare no effort in preserving scientific capitals.

Internationally-renowned Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani died of cancer at a hospital in the US on July 15.

Maryam Mirzakhani, the Iranian genius mathematician and the first-ever female winner of the prestigious Fields Medal prize, had been hospitalized in the US for deteriorating health conditions caused by cancer recurrence.
