Instagram now supports Persian script

4 Nov 2017 - 16:07

Financial Tribune- Instagram has added support for languages that are written and read from right to left, namely Persian, Arabic, and Hebrew.

According to company statistics, there are more than 60 million Instagram users in the MENA region. After Telegram, Instagram is the second most used social media application in Iran with some 20 million downloads so far.

According to the news website The Verge, Instagram says it had to reformat its entire app to support an opposite text flow.

It has been a long time coming for such a software update, considering Instagram has up until today supported 33 languages.

The app has for quite some time supported languages like Chinese, Korean, and Japanese that can be read right to left and top to bottom, but never before has it supported exclusively right-to-left languages. There are still some popular ones left out, including Urdu and Azeri.

“With this update, we hope more people around the world will be able to connect with the people and interests that matter to them,” the company writes in its blog post on the update.

Language preferences are found in the main settings panel, and the new options should be available now given the update is first installed.

Instagram is not the first social media app to add languages that read right to left. Twitter added Persian and Arabic to its mobile website back in 2012, having already supported both languages on its main website previously.
