IRNA - Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said the US new policy on not buying Iran's heavy water is 'their own problem.'
'Americans have so far purchased 30 tons of heavy water from Iran and were interested to continue buying it, but their new government has said it is not going to do it anymore, which is their own problem,' Ali Akbar Salehi told reporters on Friday.
US President Donald Trump administration has put a halt to US purchase of heavy water from Iran.
Senior Trump administration officials confirmed to the Washington-based Free Beacon news website on Wednesday that the US government would no longer engage in these nuclear transactions with Iran.
Trump administration officials told the Free Beacon they have informed Iran that it is now solely responsible for maintaining compliance with the nuclear deal.
'No, the United States is not planning to purchase any Iranian heavy water,' a White House National Security Council spokesperson told the Free Beacon. 'We have made it clear to Iran that it is their responsibility to remain under their heavy water limit in the JCPOA,' or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the official title of the nuclear agreement.
According to Press TV, Iran had declared in March that its 2015 nuclear agreement with the P5+1 group of countries does not oblige it to ship out its excess heavy water.
'Nothing in the [nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)] requires Iran to ship out the excess heavy water which is made available to the international market but has not yet found an actual buyer to which the heavy water needs to be delivered,' Iran said in a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in March 2017.
