IRNA – Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah’s trip to Washington and his meeting with US Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis aimed at reducing tensions between Iran and the US, Al Arab Newspaper reported.
Alawi trip to US took place after his meeting with Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, according to Al Arab newspaper.
Zarif and his accompanying delegation met with Alawi bin Abdullah in the city of Salalah on July 2 within the framework of regular consultations between the two countries.
At the meeting, the two sides discussed joint cooperation between the two countries in various fields and ways of strengthening it, Omani news agency Al-Omaniya earlier reported.
Like what happened in 2013 resulting in signing Iran nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), his tour to US is to emphasize mediation of Muscat between Tehran and Washington, the Arab newspaper wrote.
Meanwhile, Omani Foreign Ministry wrote in its Twitter account that both sides discussed security and regional issues and also developing ties.
The Omani monarchy has close ties with the United States and Iran, and some political observers believe that the country can play an effective role in reducing tensions between Tehran and Washington, according to the Al Arab newspaper.
