Iran denies role in Turkey's protests: spokesman

5 Jun 2013 - 16:56

TEHRAN, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi denied any Iranian role in the recent protests in Turkey, semi-official Fars news agency reported Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Turkey's state-run TRT TV reported that the Turkish police had arrested an Iranian national over alleged charges of provoking protesters at Kizilay Square in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

"We were also informed about the news through media," Araqchi said, adding that "We have officially asked the Turkish government for explanation over the authenticity of the news."

Turkey has been witnessing nationwide anti-government protests, after clashes took place between the police and demonstrators recently at Gezi Park of Taksim Square in Istanbul.

The demonstration started as an environmental sit-in at the park over plans to redevelop that part of Taksim Square, but later turned violent after vandals and some extremist groups mixed themselves into the peaceful protesters.
