IRNA – Iran’s Justice Minister Alireza Avaei voiced his satisfaction on cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan on extradition of prisoners between Iran and Afghanistan.

'Good cooperation has been made in this regard,' Avaei said.

He said that some 5,000 Afghans are imprisoned in Iran while 22 Iranians are serving their prison terms in Afghanistan, Avaei said in a meeting with his Afghan counterpart Abdul Baseer Anwar in Tehran.

Avaei said that a large number of Afghan nationals are imprisoned in Iran due to drug-related offenses.

During the meeting, Afghan deputy justice minister for human rights and international affairs Mahmoud Abbasi said that some 650 Afghan prisoners were extradited to Afghanistan over past two years.

He said that the two countries were facing challenges in extraditing prisoners which would be solved if they refer to the treaties between the two states.

The two delegations signed a judicial cooperation agreement in the end of the meeting.
