UN call for peace talks raises hopes for ending Yemen crisis

1 Nov 2018 - 12:34

MNA – Iranian Ambassador to London Hamid Baeidinjead said the call by the UN Special Envoy for Yemen for immediate peace talks raises hopes for ending the humanitarian crisis after more than two years of bloodshed.

“The call by UN Special Envoy for Yemen to immediately start talks to end the war in Yemen, and the support it has received, raises hopes for ending the humanitarian crisis after 2+ years of an unnecessary war by the Arab world's richest nation on the Arab world's poorest nation,” wrote Iranian Ambassador to London Hamid Baeidinjead on Wednesday.

In a statement on Wednesday, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, urged “all concerned parties to seize this opportunity to engage constructively with our current efforts to swiftly resume political consultations to agree on a framework for political negotiations, and confidence-building measures, in particular enhancing the capacities of the Central Bank of Yemen, the exchange of prisoners and the re-opening of Sanaa airport.”

"We remain committed to bring the Yemeni parties to the negotiations table within a month. Dialogue remains the only path to reach an inclusive agreement,” he stressed.

United Nations has asked Sweden to host Yemen peace talks, to which Sweden has replied that it would be "happy about it" but that nothing was definite.

Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a brutal war against Yemen in March 2015, destroying the country’s infrastructure, causing famine and a cholera outbreak, as well as the death of more than 10,000 people.

The latest report by United Nations humanitarian chief says the war on Yemen has left as many as 8.4 million people in need of urgent food aid.
