Iranian, Azeri intelligence services draft security deal

16 Dec 2018 - 17:39

Tasnim – Iran’s Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alawi said the intelligence services of the country and neighboring Azerbaijan have agreed on a draft deal to boost security ties.

Speaking after a meeting with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Friday night, Alawi said there are good interactions between the intelligence and security services of the two countries.

“Combating global terrorism, organized crime and illicit drugs smuggling and exchanging information is the main part of the cooperation and relations between the two countries’ intelligence services,” he said.

The minister added that Iranian and Azeri security and intelligence services have drafted an agreement on strengthening the security relations between the two countries, hoping that it would be signed during his ongoing trip to Baku.

Iran and Azerbaijan have accelerated efforts in recent years to forge closer partnership in various areas.

Aliyev has paid several official visits to Tehran over the past few years.

In one of the trips in 2016, the two sides signed eleven memorandums of understanding and agreements to promote mutual cooperation in various fields.
