Russia never worried about Assad's visit to Tehran: Senior diplomat

22 Mar 2019 - 12:18

Press TV - Russia’s ambassador to Tehran has dismissed as “baseless” media reports claiming that Moscow was displeased with the recent visit of Syrian Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Iran, saying such claims were aimed at “creating a rift” between the two friendly states.

“We were never worried about this visit,” Levan Dzhagaryan said Wednesday.

Spreading such reports, he added, was meant “to create a rift in the Iranian-Russian-Syrian relations, ”adding that media outlets that circulated the news failed to achieve their objective.

President Assad visited Tehran in February, his first public visit to Iran since the start of Syria’s foreign-sponsored militancy in 2011. During his trip, Assad held talks with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani.

Over the past years, Iran and Russia have been respectively lending military advisory support and aerial backup to the Syrian military in its battle against Takfiri terrorists.

Elsewhere in his Wednesday remarks, the Russian diplomat reiterated his country’s commitment to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and its friendly relations with the Islamic Republic.

“We are committed to our friendship and our commitment to Iran both in the nuclear agreement and in other issues such as human rights and regional policies,” Dzhagaryan said.

He censured as “baseless” the US and its allies’ criticisms of Tehran’s regional policies.

The Russian diplomat further expressed satisfaction with the current level of bilateral cooperation between Iran and Russia in various fields, hoping that the banking problems between the two countries would be resolved through joint efforts.

Moscow and Tehran are scheduled to discuss the development of bilateral economic cooperation during the next meeting of the Russian-Iranian Joint Committee in June.
