Iran’s oil minister and the president of Russia’s state-owned company, Rosneft, have discussed the expansion of Tehran-Moscow relations in the field of energy.
In a meeting on Tuesday, Rostam Qasemi of Iran and Igor Sechin reviewed the enhancement of mutual ties with regards to gas extraction, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), ISNA reported, citing a report from Russia’s Interfax.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Qasemi arrived in Moscow on Friday to attend the second summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in the Russian capital.

The event, which was held in Moscow on July 1-2, was also attended by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The GECF, whose first ministerial meeting was held in Tehran in May 2001, is an intergovernmental organization comprising 13 of the world's leading natural gas producers, namely Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. Kazakhstan, Iraq, the Netherlands and Norway are observer states.

Iran LNG Company (ILC) announced on April 12 that it plans to launch the country’s first LNG plant with an estimated investment capital of USD 5 billion. The facility will start its early production when half that sum is provided.

The first phase of the facility (65-percent complete) includes a 1,100-megawatt power plant, storage facilities for LNG and LPG, and offshore docks.
