Venezuela’s president says he is ready for dialogue with Trump based on respect

23 Jun 2020 - 17:18

TASS - Trump specified on Twitter on Monday that he was ready to do so to discuss Maduro’s departure from office

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro expressed readiness for a dialogue with US President Donald Trump on condition that it be based on mutual respect.

When it is necessary, "I am ready to talk to Donald Trump based on respect," Maduro told Venezuela’s AVN news agency. On Sunday, Axios quoted President Trump as saying he would consider meeting Maduro. However, Trump specified on Twitter on Monday that he was ready to do so to discuss Maduro’s departure from office. "I would only meet with Maduro to discuss one thing: a peaceful exit from power!" Trump wrote.

On January 23, 2019 Juan Guaido, Venezuelan opposition leader and parliament speaker, whose appointment to that position had been cancelled by the country’s Supreme Court, declared himself interim president at a rally in the country’s capital of Caracas. Several countries, including the United States, most EU states, Lima Group members (excluding Mexico), Australia, Albania, Georgia and Israel, as well as the Organization of American States, recognized him.

Maduro, in turn, blasted the move as a coup staged by Washington and said he was severing diplomatic ties with the US. Contrary to Washington’s move, Russia, Belarus, Bolivia, China, Iran, Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Syria and Turkey voiced support for Maduro.
