Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister on Legal Affairs Reza Najafi has termed Iran as the biggest victim of chemical weapons in the contemporary era.

Najafi made the remarks on Wednesday in a meeting with Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Fernando Arias.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the second day of the Fifth Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention in The Hague, Switzerland.

He elaborated on the effects of the cruel unilateral US sanctions on the health and treatment of chemical veterans in Iran.

The official stressed full, effective, and non-discriminatory implementation of the provisions of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and compliance with the obligations of the member.

He further stated that regarding international cooperation, especially the exchange of chemical materials and equipment for peaceful uses, removing road-blocks to chemical trade between member states and no imposition of unilateral sanctions contrary to the convention between member states.

The purpose of the Chemical Weapons Convention will not be achieved without the complete destruction of all types of chemical weapons stockpiles and the universality of the convention, he further noted.

Earlier, Iran’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations had said that Iranians will never forget the role that some Western states played in assisting the Saddam regime in the systematic use of chemical weapons against the Iranians.
