Tehran withdraws licenses of 8 French, German IAEA inspectors, says report

17 Sep 2023 - 22:48

The Iran Project - According to Fars News Agency, Iran has revoked the licenses of eight French and German inspectors affiliated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

This action was taken in response to a statement made by the IAEA's Board of Governors, supported by the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States, which accused Iran of not adhering to its safeguards commitments.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in a statement denounced what he called Iran's “disproportionate and unprecedented” move to withdraw the designation of several of the agency’s “most experienced” inspectors assigned to conduct verification activities in the country under the NPT Safeguards Agreement.

In reaction to IAEA's claims, Tehran criticized this move as being "hostile" and "unconstructive," stating that it was unwarranted given their positive and continuous cooperation with the IAEA.

Nasser Kanani, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, stated on Saturday that the United States and the three European parties involved in the 2015 nuclear agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), exploited the UN nuclear watchdog in order to achieve their own political objectives.

Kanaani further explained that Iran's decision to revoke the licenses was made in accordance with Article 9 of their agreement with the IAEA regarding safeguards issues.
