Tehran, Washington swap prisoners as billions of Iran assets released

19 Sep 2023 - 19:10

The Iran Project - According to informed sources, two out of the five Iranians who were released from prison in the United States as part of a prisoner exchange between Tehran and Washington have arrived in Doha, Qatar, with the intention of returning home.

The individuals heading back to Iran are Mehrdad Moein Ansari and Reza Sarhangpour. Reports indicate that all five Iranians have been released.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Naser Kanani stated during a press conference on Monday that two detainees would be returning home, two would remain in the US by their own choice, and another would be joining his family in a third country.

In a reciprocal move, five US detainees left Tehran on a Qatari plane and landed in Doha on Monday, where they are scheduled to depart for the US.

As a result of the prisoner exchange, the US imposed sanctions on former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the country's Intelligence Ministry.

However, senior officials from President Joe Biden's administration emphasized that diplomacy regarding Iran's nuclear program was still an option.

The prisoner swap was facilitated through a deal brokered by Qatar, which also resulted in the unfreezing of $6 billion of Iran's funds.

Governor of the Central Bank of Iran Mohammad Reza Farzin confirmed that the country's funds had been transferred to Qatari banks, including 5.573 billion euros deposited into accounts held by six Iranian banks in Qatar's Al Ahli and Al Dukhan banks.
