Yemen condemns abduction of Iranian diplomat in Sana'a

25 Jul 2013 - 12:38

Yemen has condemned the recent abduction of an Iranian diplomat in Sana’a, vowing to make use of all legal channels to prosecute the perpetrators behind the kidnapping.
“Any act of kidnapping is deplorable, and it makes no difference whether the abducted is a Yemeni, a foreigner or a diplomat,” Fars News Agency quoted Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi as saying on Wednesday.

He said the criminals and those who engage in kidnapping tarnish Yemen’s international image and afflict the country’s economic interests and its ties with neighboring countries.

Qirbi said Sana’a will use all legal channels to track down the kidnappers and called on Yemeni citizens to cooperate with security agencies in this regard.

Police sources in Yemen reportedly stated on Sunday that unidentified gunmen had kidnapped Nourahmad Nikbakht -- the administrative staff member at the Iranian Embassy in the Yemeni capital.

The Iranian diplomat was travelling in the diplomatic quarter in southern Sana’a when armed men blocked the road, forced him to get out of his vehicle and took him to an unknown location.

On Sunday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Yemeni charge d’affaires to Tehran to convey the Islamic Republic's serious concern over the fate of the kidnapped Iranian diplomat and to reiterate the responsibility of Sana’a in guaranteeing Nikbakht’s safety.
