Anti-war US senator slams Obama’s plan to engage Syria in war of attrition

25 Jul 2013 - 15:36

Anti-war Republican US Senator Rand Paul has again blasted the Obama administration over its plans to militarily intervene in Syria, charging that Washington intends to engage in a war of attrition in the Arab Country.
“Last week I was told by the administration, you know what their goal is in Syria? To fight to a stalemate,” Paul said in a Monday address at the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention, according to a Wednesday report by RT.
“I’ve told them I’m not sending my kids or your kids or any American soldiers to fight for stalemate,” he added.
While US lawmakers are continuing to debate what role the US should play in the bloody foreign-backed insurgency in Syrian, Senator Paul insisted during his speech that US President Barack Obama is asking for the American military to open up a front in the Middle East nation without waiting for congressional approval.

Paul further complained that Obama plans to engage US troops in Syria without getting authorization from the Congress.

“Even if you believe we should arm Islamic fighters in Syria, shouldn't, at the very least, Congress vote on the matter?” Paul asked his audience. “The Constitution is very clear. Congress is to declare war, not the President.”

“Nevertheless,” he added, “President Obama is moving ahead with plans to get involved in the Syrian civil war, without the authorization of Congress.”

The Republican senator went on to reiterate that the US must not act as a global policeman but a peace keeper.
“For our country’s sake, certainly for our soldiers’ sake … America’s mission should always be to keep the peace, not police the world,” Paul said.
Meanwhile, Senator Paul’s father, former Texas Republic Senator Ron Paul, said last month that talks of chemical weapon use prompting the US to intervene is “identical to the massive deception campaign that led us into the Iraq War.”

This is while, the White House has reportedly weighed the possibility of enforcing a no-fly zone over Syria, and on Monday the House and Senate intelligence committees finally approved a measure that will allow the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to ship arms to the foreign-backed militants in Syria.

However, Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey has rejected the idea of enforcing the no-fly zone over Syria, arguing that it will be very expensive and would amount to an act of war on the part of the US.
