Iran urges Ecuador, Mexico to negotiate to resolve dispute

After Ecuadorian police officers broke into the Mexican embassy in Quito, the Islamic Republic of Iran invited the two countries to hold talks in order to resolve the diplomatic issue.


According to The Iran Project,In a statement on Sunday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani underlined the need for respecting the security and safety of diplomatic and consular premises, noting that reports on the raid are alarming.

Kanaani referred to the international norm that a host government is expected to be committed to safeguarding the security of diplomatic missions, urging both Ecuador and Mexico to negotiate.

Mexico severed diplomatic ties with Ecuador after the raid into the Mexican embassy in Quito and the detaining of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas late Friday night.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reacted to the dispute, instructing his foreign minister to cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador.
