Fresh US sanctions on Iran disappointing: Iranian MP

4 Aug 2013 - 11:49

An Iranian lawmaker has criticized the US House of Representatives for passing a new bill of sanctions against the Islamic Republic, describing the move as “disappointing.”
“The United States does not stop its double-standard policy and they (Americans) try to pursue their national interests by adopting a carrot-and-stick policy,” the spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s Majlis , Seyyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, said on Saturday.

He further stated that the US government speaks of negotiations with Iran, but seeks to mount pressure on the Islamic Republic in practice.

Washington does not even take the opportunity created by an administration change in Iran to improve its relations with Tehran, the Iranian legislator pointed out.

On July 31, the US House approved a bill to impose tougher sanctions on Iran’s oil exports and other economic sectors.

The bill, which must be approved by the Senate and signed by President Barack Obama to become law, seeks to cut Iran's oil exports by one million barrels per day over a year.

It also blacklists any business in Iran's automotive, mining and construction sectors and commits the United States to the goal of ending all Iranian oil sales worldwide by 2015.

The US has imposed several rounds of illegal sanctions on Iran, which Washington claims to be aimed at pressuring Tehran to abandon its nuclear energy program.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of potentially pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Tehran has categorically rejected the accusation, arguing that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a committed member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

In its numerous inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities, the IAEA has never found any evidence showing that Tehran’s nuclear energy program has been diverted toward non-civilian objectives.
