Europe, Italy must take new political initiatives: Iran official

7 Aug 2013 - 22:30

Iranian President Hassan Rohani’s Chief of Staff has called on Europe and Italy to adopt new strategies and take initiatives to use economic cooperation for the settlement of political issues.
In a meeting with Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Lapo Pistelli in Tehran on Tuesday, Mohammad Nahavandian hailed activities of Iran-Italy joint chamber of commerce and said private sectors play a leading role in increasing trade exchanges.
“The administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared to increase its ties and interact with all countries and achieve an acceptable solution for the existing issues based on mutual respect and interests through a win-win approach,” the Iranian official stated.
He added that Tehran and Rome have a history of amicable cooperation and enjoy great grounds for strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Pistelli, for his turn, submitted Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta’s written message for the Iranian president to Nahavandian and said Rome is keen to boost cooperation with Tehran in various fields.

He reiterated his country’s readiness to cooperate with Iran to reconstruct Afghanistan, particularly after the withdrawal of foreign forces from the war-torn country.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains high across the country.

In an earlier meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Tuesday, Pistelli said his country hopes for effective cooperation with Iran over issues such as the crises in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.
