An analyst says Russia and those seeking a political solution to the Syria crisis should not allow the US and its allies to “abuse” Moscow’s initiative regarding the Arab country’s chemical weapons.
“It is incumbent on Russia and others to ensure that the US and its allies do not abuse the initiative to create just another lever for their criminal agenda of regime change against the Syrian government,” Finian Cunningham wrote in an article published by Press TV.

Cunningham said the US and its allies must address the issue of their arsenal weapons of mass destruction in return for Syria disbanding its chemical arms stockpile.

Halting the supply of weapons and dispatch of mercenaries to Syria must be another part of the deal, Cunningham added.

“This criminal covert destabilization has been going on for more than two and half years and is the primary reason why the country is ensnared in a conflict that has resulted in 100,000 deaths and up to seven million refugees out of a population of only 22 million,” the political commentator said.
Describing the US state terrorism as the key to the Syria crisis, Cunningham urged Russia to adopt a stricter stance towards Washington as the White House “is in no moral or legal position to lay down demands on the Syrian government over its compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention.”
On September 9, Syria welcomed a proposal offered by Russia to put its chemical weapons stockpile under international supervision.

Following a three-day talks in Geneva to discuss Moscow’s initiative, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced an agreement on Saturday that would eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons by mid-2014.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
