Rouhani to address UN General Assembly next week

21 Sep 2013 - 12:33

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is scheduled to address the 68th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.
President Rouhani will depart Tehran for New York on September 22, and will attend the opening session of the General Assembly on September 24. He is planned to deliver three speeches, ISNA reported on Friday.

The Iranian president will deliver a speech before the UN General Assembly in the afternoon of September 24.

On September 25, Rouhani is due to address the special session of the Nuclear Disarmament Conference as the current chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

He will also address foreign ministers of the NAM, which is an international organization with 120 member states. Nearly two-thirds of the countries of the UN are also NAM members.

Additionally, the Iranian president is expected to meet and hold talks with world leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting.

Rouhani has not ruled out the possibility of a meeting with US President Barack Obama during his upcoming New York visit.

“Meeting Barack Obama, the president of the US, is not on the agenda of my trip; of course, depending on the circumstances that come up, everything is possible in the world of politics,” President Rouhani said in an interview with American TV channel NBC in Tehran on September 18.

During the interview, the Iranian president also said he would elaborate on issues including Iran’s foreign policy and its position on regional and international matters in the forthcoming UN event.
