TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran reiterated its commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and meantime, slammed the West for its double-standard policy towards the issue of nuclear activities by various states.


Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham reiterated Iran's fundamental principles in prohibiting development of the weapons of mass destruction and making the Middle-East free from such destructive weapons, and said, "Zionist regime has joined none of the weapons of mass destruction treaties and secret nuclear programs of the regime, which are not controlled by any international organization, pose a serious threat to regional and world countries."

She also called for the international community to deal with the issue seriously.

On Friday, Iran's Residing Representative at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Reza Najafi warned nations about the threats posed by Israel's nuclear arsenals to global peace and security, and lashed out at the western states for their double-standard policies towards nuclear programs in various countries.

Iran's IAEA envoy, who is also the head of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) group of nations at the UN nuclear agency, noted that Israel's refusal to comply with the international law poses a security concern for the countries of the Middle-East, and also censured western countries for turning a blind eye to the Zionist regime's nuclear capabilities.

Late in April, former Iran's Residing Representative at the IAEA Ali Asqar Soltaniyeh said, "Allowing Israel to continue to its production of nuclear weapons without any punishment will have serious consequences for regional and global peace and security."

"Non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament are both sides of one coin. Nuclear-armed countries have diverted the attention of the international community from their constant measures to achieve nuclear weapons under the pretext of non-proliferation," he added.

As a responsible country that has no nuclear weapons and carries out merely peaceful nuclear activities, the Islamic Republic will remain completely committed to the NPT objectives.

"We believe that full implementation of the NPT without discrimination plays a fundamental role in promoting international peace and security," former Iranian envoy said.

Soltaniyeh once again renewed Iran's call for nuclear disarmament weapons based on the NPT regulations.

Israel is believed to be the sole possessor of nuclear arms in the Middle-East with over 200 ready-to-launch warheads in its stockpile.

Iran, an NPT-signatory, has also called for the removal of all weapons of mass destruction from across the globe.
