An Iranian lawmaker says a resolution adopted by the UN Security Council to remove chemical weapons from Syria will prevent military intervention in the country.
“This resolution is deterrent and prevents a US military action against Syria. In other words, any action which can prevent US warmongering in the region is valuable and can impact the peace process in Syria,” said Deputy Chairman of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Mansour Haqiqatpour on Sunday.

The Iranian lawmaker further called on Western countries to “remain committed to the UN resolution” on Syria and stop threatening the Arab country with military strikes so that Syrians can decide their fate through ballot boxes in 2014.
“Unfortunately, such resolutions are selective and are not adopted against the US and the Zionist regime [of Israel], which possess advanced chemical weapons,” said Haqiqatpour.


 On September 27, the UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution condemning the use of chemical weapons in Syria and calling for their elimination.

The resolution envisages a plan to eradicate Syria’s arsenal of chemical weapons without calling for automatic punitive action against the Syrian government if it does not comply.

Syrian UN Ambassador Bashar al-Ja’afari has welcomed the resolution, saying it covers most of his country’s concerns.

Before the resolution was adopted, the US was seeking to win international support for waging a war against Syria after foreign-backed militants operating in the country accused the government of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds on the suburbs of Damascus on August 21. However, Damascus categorically denied the allegation.

Syria has been gripped by deadly turmoil since March 2011. According to the UN, over 100,000 people have died in Syria since the outbreak of the violence.
