Iranian scientists succeed in early targeting of cancer tumors by new algorithm

2 Oct 2013 - 13:09

TEHRAN (ISNA)- Iranian researchers at Tabriz University have identified cancer tumors in early stages using a new algorithm, through simulation method to increase precision for targeting cancer tumors.
Ahmad Salmanogli Ogli Khayavi, a researcher of the project said tumor cells can be controlled before they reach the development level.

One of the main problems in detecting small tumor cells through optical imaging, which is the most precise methods for detection, is low penetration of light inside tissues which is not sufficient for detection.

The imaging has used Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), which sends a large number of nano-biosensors to tumors which boosts emitted photons to detect small tumors in early stages.

The research is conducted in 4 phases which deals with designing and simulating nano-particles. Then biological elements were added and nano-biosensors were finalized. The method uses PSO algorithm to boost targeting precision.

Using the method, the tumors would appear in the early stage and can be controlled by precise imaging before reaching the development and invasive phase which could prove effective in detecting and treating cancer.

Results of the research have been published in IEEE Transactions on Biochemical Engineering.
