Iran, UAE urge political solution to Syria crisis

23 Oct 2013 - 9:46

Iran and the United Arab Emirates have called for a political solution to end the ongoing Syrian crisis, stressing that Syria’s future must be determined only by its people.
In a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and UAE Deputy Foreign Minister Tariq Ahmad al-Heidan voiced their countries’ support for the Syrians’ right to determine their own destiny.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Reports indicate that the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside the country.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.

Amir-Abdollahian and Heidan also stressed the need for collective efforts from regional countries in the fight against radicalism, describing the phenomenon as a major source of insecurity and instability in the Middle East.

Moreover, the pair exchanged views on the establishment of security in the Persian Gulf, praised Tehran’s positive measures to this end, and called for further cooperation among regional states.
