Iran finishes 1st at Powerlifting Asian Open cup

8 Nov 2013 - 12:20

Iranian physically-challenged weightlifters have reigned supreme at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting Asian Open Championships in Malaysia, and stood on top of the podium.
On Thursday, Iranian athlete Mansour Pourmirzaie set a new world and Asian record of 273 kilograms in the men’s +107-kg Asian and free competition sections, and picked up two gold medals at the Titiwangsa Stadium of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

A South Korean lifter pushed 233 kilograms to win silvers in both categories, while a sportsman from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was just behind the top two weightlifters with a lift of 220 kilograms.

Moreover, a Chinese athlete had a golden lift of 202 kilograms in the men’s 107-kg Asian competition class, ahead of a Malaysian lifter who just failed to snatch the victory from the Chinese man with a lift of 192 kilograms.

Iran’s Mohammad Rezaeian completed the podium, but only in bronze position with 179 kilograms.

An Egyptian weightlifter lifted 225 kilograms to secure his gold in the men’s 107-kg free competition category, which had attracted weightlifting champions from other continents. His compatriot could also clear the bar with a lift of 205 kilogram to clinch the silver, three kilograms ahead of a third-placed Chinese sportsman.

Around 200 athletes from 30 countries took part in the 2013 IPC Powerlifting Asian Open Championships, which opened in Kuala Lumpur on November 3 and wrapped up on November 7.

The athletes participated in the championships to achieve the Minimum Qualifying Standard (MQS) for the 2014 IPC Powerlifting World Championships, which will take place in the United Arab Emirates from April 5 to 11 next year.
