Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov says that the nuclear agreement between Tehran and the Sextet of world powers will improve the security situation in the Middle East.
In an interview with the Russian daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta on Friday, Ryabkov said that the deal reached in Geneva is an important step toward a comprehensive solution to the nuclear dispute.
The Russian official pointed that Iran-IAEA cooperation will be increased in the course of the six months deal to end any concerns by the international community over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear energy program.
He said that deal provides the roadmap for moving toward a ‘comprehensive agreement’ which ‘would recognize Iran’s right to enrich uranium’ as a member state of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Ryabkov also slammed new US sanctions against Iran as ‘unacceptable,’ saying they are contradictory to the Geneva deal, under which the West agreed to ease some of its sanctions against Iran.
On November 24, Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - Russia, China, France, Britain and the US - plus Germany sealed an interim deal in the Swiss city of Geneva to lay the groundwork for the full resolution of the dispute between the West and Iran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.
In exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, the six countries undertook to lift some of the existing sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
