Washington expands support to Al Qaeda rebels in Syria

21 Dec 2013 - 15:03

TEHRAN (FNA)- Washington has decided to negotiate with the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic Front as an alternative for the so-called moderate Free Syrian Army to cover up its support for extremists, Global Research said.

“The existence of more moderate opposition brigades supported by the West is a myth. They exist in name; they do not constitute a meaningful military force. They are not the object of significant support by their Western handlers, who prefer to channel their aid to the Al Qaeda affiliated brigades,” Prof Michel Chossudovsky wrote in an article on Global Research.

Chossudovsky said he believed that the US deliberately labeled the FSA as ‘moderate’ just to serve as a mask for covering the channel of support to Al-Qaeda.

He also said that after the conflict broke between Al-Qaeda affiliates and the FSA, American officials announced that they are going to negotiate with the Islamic Front to mediate between them.

But the truth is something beyond mediation, he said, American officials want to find another umbrella organization like Islamic Front for supporting the Al-Qaeda affiliates.

“What the US and its allies are establishing are new effective ‘direct channels’ for increasing their support to their Al Qaeda foot soldiers, essentially using the new Islamic Front as a ‘Go Between’,” Chossudovsky said.

The conflict in Syria started in March 2011, when sporadic pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of western and regional states.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle-East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government has boosted its political and military support to Takfiri extremists.

Washington has remained indifferent to warnings by Russia and other world powers about the consequences of arming militant groups.
