New York, Dec 28, IRNA – US retired ambassador Thomas Pickering has said the Iranian President?s anti-violence proposal has opened a new door to the world in fight against violence and extremism.

Speaking to IRNA exclusively, Pickering, who among his many diplomatic appointments served as US ambassador to the United Nations from 1989 to 1992, said adoption of the WAVE Act at the UN would change the image of Iran and its foreign policy worldwide.


On December 18, President Rouhani’s World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) proposal was overwhelmingly ratified at the UN General Assembly with 190 votes.

The WAVE Act calls on all nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism.

Pickering said making such a move against violence and extremism by Iran has indicated that the country is fully aware of the international concerns and is trying to remove them.

The retired diplomat added that the WAVE Act could help improve Iran?s relations with the international community.

The Iranian President made the proposal in an address to the UN Disarmament Conference in New York on September 25.

Iran?s WAVE Act urges UN member states to take “appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace and achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.”
